Bog Oak: Work in Progress

Not all wood begins its story in a workshop.
Some of it begins thousands of years ago, buried in silence.

Bog oak is not just material it’s time itself, preserved beneath the earth. When I hold a raw piece in my hands, I’m not just choosing wood. I’m choosing a fragment of history.

The Beginning: Choosing the Right Piece

Every piece of bog oak is different. Some are cracked, some are dense and almost stone-like. Others reveal deep black tones that only appear after careful cutting.

I spend time studying each fragment its weight, its grain, its hidden flaws. Not every piece is meant to become jewellery. The right one has to feel right.

Shaping Something That Already Exists

I don’t force the material into shape.
Instead, I follow it.

Using simple tools, I slowly carve, sand, and refine. The process is quiet, repetitive, almost meditative. There’s no rushing this bog oak doesn’t allow it.

Sometimes the wood resists. Sometimes it surprises me.

That’s part of the work.

From Raw Material to Wearable Story

What begins as a rough, ancient fragment slowly transforms into something personal something meant to be worn, carried, and experienced.

Each finished piece still holds its origin:

  • the darkness shaped by time
  • the texture created by nature
  • the imperfections that make it unique

No two pieces are ever the same.

Why It Matters

In a world of mass production, working with bog oak is different.

It forces patience.
It demands respect.
And it reminds me that the most beautiful things are often already there waiting to be revealed.

Each finished piece carries this process within it.
